First appearing in 1971, this mythical and prestigious wine is the handiwork of master winemaker Piero Antinori, current owner of the estate and a descendant of an internationally renowned Tuscan family. The unique terroir of Tignanello covers 47 hectares planted primarily with Sangiovese (80%), the region's most typical variety. Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) and Cabernet Franc (5%) also grow well here in the crumbly limestone soil, producing grapes used to make one of the finest wines in all of Italy, if not the world. Its powerful, concentrated style derives first and foremost from the special qualities of the terroir.
