The Super Tuscans - 2003 Vintage

Following rainy and rather cold conditions throughout the fall and winter, the spring of 2003 was one of the warmest and driest in recent years. Good budding slightly earlier than usual in all varieties promised an abundant crop. Conditions were also excellent for flowering and development of the grapes. From June on through the rest of the summer, conditions remained ideal, with high temperatures and absolutely no rain. As a result, the grapes ripened early, and by mid-August, early ripening varieties already had good natural concentration with high sugar levels. A lack of rainfall at the end of the season, however, combined with a ban on irrigation, reduced the quantity of the crop somewhat. Dry weather continued throughout the harvest period, enabling winegrowers to select exactly the right moment to pick the fruit without risk of damage.
