A mild finish to the winter, combined with dry, hot conditions in the early spring of 1997, encouraged the buds to break fully ten days earlier than usual. In April, temperatures dropped suddenly, causing the buds to stop growing. However, hot, sunny summer weather continued right through September and into the harvest, by which time the grapes were exceptionally healthy and had high levels of sugar. Generally speaking, the 1997 harvest was slightly smaller than average, but of exceptional quality and probably the best since 1990 - the most celebrated vintage in fifty years.
