Solaia

Like its better known cousin Tignanello, Solaia is the result of the winemaking know-how of Piero Antinori, who inherited the experience and rich tradition acquired by his family - one of the most influential in Italy - since Medieval times. Just ten hectares in size, the estate of Solaia is smaller than that of Tignanello, but its wines are very bit as fine. Accounting for 75% of production, Cabernet Sauvignon rules here, complemented by Sangiovese (20%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). Composed primarily of limestone gravel, the estate's soil undeniably contributes to the complexity of the wine, which is aged in new French oak barrels. It should be mentioned that the Wine Spectator gave the 1997 Solaia the highest rating of any Tuscan wine (98 points) and named it 2000 Wine of the Year.
