This document, "The Wine Merchants' Opinion of the 2005 Vintage" is a synthesis of tasting notes compiled and analysed. They cover:
120 great red Bordeaux wines
17 great dry white Bordeaux wines
12 great sweet white Bordeaux wines
Due to missing or incomplete responses, it was impossible to make a serious, representative synthesis of certain wines, which explains why a few great Bordeaux are not included on this list.
What extraordinary wines!
The 2005 vintage has given us truly amazing wines offering great finesse, silky texture, voluptuous generosity and extraordinary suppleness, all underscored by great depth and unmistakable power. It is rare to find all these qualities brought together in a manner so harmonious, balanced and pure at such an early age of development.
We had the great pleasure of discovering this vintage on the occasion of the comprehensive tasting organized by the Union des Grands Crus, where 124 among their members' wines were presented to the Bordeaux and Libourne wine merchants.
The 2005 vintage's exceptional conditions benefitted everyone in every appellation, producing red wines and white, and sweet wines as well. The greatest growths will come to market at very high prices, which are justified by the fact that they are indisputably some of the most prestigious wines in the world. However, Bordeaux's offering is extremely rich in excellent wines from every appellation, and the great majority will be available at perfectly affordable prices.
The Bordeaux wine merchants are happy to present their first impressions of a vintage which will very likely become a landmark in the history of Bordeaux wine. This is a year which will constitute a new point of reference for enthusiastic commentary among wine lovers in the decades to come.
