Klein Constantia

The first written accounts of the Klein Constantia Estate come from the seventeenth century. It is said that at one time the sweet wines produced here surpassed even those of Yquem, Madeira and Tokaji. The widely acclaimed qualities of Vin de Constance are inextricably linked with the estate's unique terroir. Close proximity to the oceans on either side of the narrow Cape Peninsula, which projects southwards into the cold southern Atlantic, ensures a cool, mild maritime climate. The rich, deep soils are made up mostly of decomposed granite. With the vineyards situated on the slopes of the Constantiaberg, drainage is excellent for the Muscat de Frontignan vines planted here. The grapes are left on the vines to over-ripen and are then harvested late (in March), a technique historically associated with the production of the straw-coloured Hermitage wine. Since 1981, Duggy Jooste has ensured the superior quality of the wine produced at Klein Constantia and been guardian of the estate's legendary reputation.
