Grands-Echézeaux

Echézeaux has, unfortunately, always been a subject of controversy. The wine produced on these 37 hectares, subdivided into 11 lieux-dits, is not of consistent quality. The various winegrowing slopes of the terroir lie at different altitudes, face in various directions and comprise diverse types of soil and substrata. In addition, the winegrowers cultivating the vineyards here do not all share the same expertise. All of these factors have an impact on the quality of the wine produced. The resulting inconsistency is regrettable, because Echézeaux has wonderful potential. About 80 of the appellation's owners emphasize quantity over quality, and, because of this, many of the appellation's winegrowers are not convinced of the intrinsic potential of this Grand Cru Classé.
