Clos-de-Vougeot

The exceptional potential of Clos de Vougeot has long been recognized. As early as the first decades of the twelfth century, Benedictine monks in Citeaux set the boundaries of this rather large parcel of land. During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, it was enclosed with a low wall or "clos" (meaning enclosure), which has come to serve as the symbol of this Grand Cru. Some 90 owners have a share in the terroir's 51 hectares. The lower section lying close to the national highway has deep clayey soil, the middle part is a mixture of clay and limestone glacial deposits, while at the top of the slopes, which rise to a height of 255 metres, the thin soil is largely composed of gravel. These three distinct types of soil are said to account for the three different styles of wine that have been produced in Clos de Vougeot since the time of the Cistercians.
