It is no accident that the world's most famous sweet white wine was born at Château d'Yquem. The estate's soil, which is warmer towards the surface and more humid beneath because of a concentration of clay, undeniably contributes to the excellent quality of the wines grown here. Lying close to the confluence of the Ciron and the Garonne rivers, Château d'Yquem experiences heavy morning dew, a condition conducive to the growth of Botrytis cinerea. Also known as noble rot, this fungus causes the grapes to develop high levels of sugar, resulting in a wine that is dense and complex. The wines of Yquem are a marriage of rich, syrupy Sémillon, which provides body and volume, and Sauvignon, with its aromas and finesse. The only other ingredient required in this recipe for perfection is the masterful touch of the estate's experienced winemakers.
