Château Haut-Brion was the only red First Growth in the 1855 classification not from Médoc. Jean de Pontac founded the winegrowing estate of Haut-Brion in 1525 in the region of Graves. Pontac's descendants inherited his commitment to quality and have ensured the château's reputation through the ages. The estate's 43 hectares of vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (45%), Merlot (37%) and Cabernet Franc (18%) - superb vines used to create Haut-Brion's magical wines. This is the only First Growth that has broken with tradition and vinifies in stainless steel vats.
