Chambertin is one of eight Burgundian Grand Crus produced in the town of Gevrey-Chambertin. Etymologists surmise that origin of the name is "champ de Bertin" (Bertin's field). Although the history behind the name is nebulous, "bertin" derives from a vernacular word meaning "bright". This highly coveted section of land comprises 12.9 hectares shared by 25 owners. The Southwest section of the appellation rises to 300 metres. Here, the Pinot Noir vines grow in dense limestone soil under rugged conditions that give the wine its legendary power and structure.
