Montrachet (Straddling Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet)

Although the limestone, clay and pebbles of Montrachet's soil appear poor and inhospitable, the Chardonnay vines that grow here produce one of the finest white wines anywhere in the world. In Old French, Montrachet means “Mont Chauve” (Bald Mountain), and the name is an accurate description of the desolate terrain where this divine wine grows. Recognized since the end of the eighteenth century for its many qualities, Montrachet is a unique region that produces a unique wine. The eight hectares of vineyards, which are the shared property of seventeen owners, straddle the towns of Puligny and Chassagne.
