When the system of Appellations d’origine contrôlée (AOC) was introduced in the 1930s, most French wineries promoted an image based on the reputation of their ownership, vineyard, label, varietals or general notion of terroir. With more than a thousand years of rich winegrowing history, Burgundy already knew from experience which of the region's vineyards produce wines considered among the world's finest. Burgundy's defined sections of land known as climats do not depend on official classification or the name of an estate, label, or varietal for their reputation: history has provided ample proof of the consistently excellent quality of the wines grown here. Every Burgundian climat has owned its name for centuries. Some climats are subdivided into smaller units known as lieux-dits. AOC Grand Cru classification is the exclusive property of thirty-three of the region's very best terroirs. Thirty-two of these are in Côte-d'Or, while the other is located in Chablis.
